Broken Promises

Rant from the President - Another call today asking whether we can take over a web development project that has gone off track. The firm who is producing the site for the client has failed to meet deadlines, become un-responsive, and the relationship has deteriorated to the point where the client wants out! Sadly, we get these calls every month - and it really bothers us to see wasted effort, wasted funds. Big promises, some initial work, payments made, and then it falls apart. Sadly, the client is left holding the bag - precious marketing funds spent and nothing to show. Unfortunately, we can't fix the problem - our reputation stands behind every project we do, and solid web production starts at the very beginning - from navigation and interface design that meets standards and accessibility guidelines to code that ensures cross browser compliancy, good web sites are about a lot more than pretty home pages. Ultimately, it's cheaper to start over the right way, than to muddle through someone else's code, only to find major gaps and challenges that will result in a less than ideal product.

Some free advice? When selecting a web design firm, speak with previous clients, and ask the hard questions - was the work done on time? Was the firm responsive to change, no matter how big or small? Did the firm discuss compliancy, and cross browser functionality? Do they have physical offices, with management structure to address concerns? If so, how long have they been at that location? How many staff do they have? How long have the staff been with the firm? Are they employees or hired contractors? Did the firm stay on budget?

The world of freelance design can seem too good to be true - cheap rates, fast turnaround, incredible capabilities… and let's face it - a solo web freelancer can create their own website to look like they are the real deal. They can talk about 'their team', and the multitude of services they offer… .so ask about meeting them at their offices, explain you want to speak with some clients. In the end, if your web site is a critical component of your marketing/business model, selecting a firm with proven reputation, a physical location that welcomes clients, experienced staff who are committed to the company, and most of all, a management structure that will ensure the delivery meets with expectations and promises… .priceless.
